Save the date for a spectacular New Year's Eve celebration in the City of Monterey!

First Night Monterey, the iconic event, is gearing up for its 31st Community Celebration of the Arts on December 31, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until Midnight in Historic Downtown Monterey.

The nine-hour family-friendly affair ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all ages, following the special theme of 'Together in Monterey.'

Notably, First Night goes on, rain or shine, as it has for over 30 years. With most performances and activities set indoors, attendees can enjoy fantastic performances, engage in a little dancing, and celebrate the New Year with friends and family. Starting at 3 PM at the Pacific Street Location, First Night Monterey and Kids' Night Out continue with 9 hours of fabulous art, music, and New Year's fun, extending into the New Year.

The grand finale features live music from featured performers, leading the audience into the New Year with a countdown to midnight. Special surprise guests may join the band for an unpredictable and exciting conclusion. Whether revelers want to be on their feet dancing or prefer to sit back and enjoy the tunes, a fun and memorable time is guaranteed as they ring in 2024 at this family-friendly, alcohol-free celebration.

In celebrating the culture of Kwanzaa and welcoming the arrival of 2024, attendees can join the Winter Wonderland Kwanzaa and Noon Year’s Eve celebration. Participants are encouraged to put on their dancing shoes and enjoy Afrobeats & More for Kids featuring Soji Sai Afrobeat from The Rock and Roll Playhouse. The event includes cultural performances, a countdown drop at 11:59 a.m., arts and craft stations, treats, and more. Interested individuals are encouraged to RSVP while supplies last.

In welcoming the New Year without the need to stay up all night, individuals can celebrate strokes of midnight around the world at 11 am, 12 pm, 3 pm, and 4 pm. Children attending the event will engage in countdowns and revel in the festivities, including the release of hundreds of colorful balloons descending from above.

This popular annual event tends to sell out, emphasizing the importance of securing tickets in advance. Chabot members can enjoy early access, with member tickets becoming available two weeks before the general public release.

Fireworks are returning to San Francisco for New Year’s Eve for 2023!

The grand fireworks display is scheduled at midnight on New Year's Eve 2023/2024, marking the transition from 2023 to 2024. As part of an annual tradition, 200,000 warmly dressed San Franciscans will bid farewell to the current year and welcome the new one together. The city, once again, will host a complimentary waterfront midnight fireworks show. Attendees are advised to arrive by 11:30 pm and proceed south of the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero for optimal viewing. The spectacular fireworks will commence precisely at the stroke of midnight.

The information below from 2022 outlines the typical occurrences during San Francisco's New Year's Eve fireworks. Updates will be provided as soon as confirmed details for the current year become available.

SF Fireworks Viewing:

  • Best Location: South of the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero between Mission and Folsom Street.
  • Fireworks Show:
    • Duration: 15 minutes at midnight.
    • Synced to music along the promenade from Pier 14 to the Bay Bridge.
  • Other Viewing Locations:
    • Treasure Island / Yerba Buena Island (arrive early).
    • Telegraph Hill (Alta Street and Calhoun Terrace).
